How we choose tools to feature on the Omnisend blog

With so many tools out there, how do we decide which ones are worth your time? Is there a process behind the scenes? Are there any we avoid?

This page is here to shed light on how we research, review, and recommend tools and apps for ecommerce marketers — and to answer a few questions you might have about how we build our lists.

How we find the best tools

You may think that when finding the best tools we go straight to the most popular ones. But it’s not that simple — we actually look for what works best for ecommerce brands.

Before creating any list, we dig into what users are trying to achieve, the challenges they face, and how much they’re willing to invest — whether that’s time, money, or both.

For our software alternatives posts

When creating comparison posts (like “Mailchimp alternatives” or “best Constant Contact alternatives”), our first step is identifying why users are seeking alternatives in the first place. Common themes like clunky UX, limited functionality, or pricing concerns often come up.
From there, we:

  • Research how each tool positions itself and what features it prioritizes
  • Analyze public user reviews from trusted platforms like G2, Capterra, and Gartner
  • Compare available features and pricing to evaluate real value
  • Pay attention to user feedback trends — especially when it comes to support, performance, and ease of use

Then we compile a list of tools that address those core pain points and genuinely offer a worthwhile switch.

For tool listicles

For broader listicles (think: landing page builders, email marketing platforms, SMS tools), the process is similar. We:

  • Explore available features and use the tools where possible
  • Compare usability, value for money, and customer support
  • Talk to other Omnisend teams and departments when relevant (especially if the tool overlaps with their work)
  • Focus on the experience from an ecommerce marketer’s perspective

We usually assess tools based on:

  • User experience
  • Core features
  • Additional features
  • Use case relevance

Our process, step-by-step

Here’s a simplified overview of how we research and select tools:

#01
Making a list

We build an initial list based on industry trends, internal suggestions, and market research

#02
Consulting

We review trusted third-party sources and user feedback to identify standout tools — and spot red flags

#03
Evaluating

We break down available features, strengths, and weaknesses based on relevance and user priorities

#04
Support

If anything’s unclear, we reach out to customer support to see how responsive and helpful they are

We’re not here to promote every new tool — we’re here to spotlight the ones that genuinely help ecommerce brands grow. While we don’t claim to run lab-style tests, we take a practical, user-first approach to evaluating tools.
